AdSense Section Targetting Problem

Like I mentioned in my previous post, one of the reasons I decided to change HTNet‘s tagline is because I’m getting tourism related ads on my site. I always knew that one of the major reasons for this was because of the old tagline; Mostly Technology and Business-centric Writing from Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia. It seems that Johor Bahru, Johor and Malaysia were the keywords that trigger this effect. However, this shouldn’t be the case.

I’ve implemented AdSense section targetting since the day it was anounced. In fact, the only section targetting I’ve used on my pages is to ignore the part of my header which displays the site name and tagline. That’s it! No other fancy-schmancy AdSense focusing.

So far, I’ve been playing nice and left this particular flaw in the AdSense section targetting procedure alone. However, my sense of curiosity got the best of me. The day that I changed my tagline, removing all traces of geographic locations, my AdSense earnings for that day and the day after increased by more than 400% from my daily average! And this is from roughly the same clickthrough rates.

I should have changed the tagline a long, long time ago! Now that I’ve shared my experience with you, please do not make the same mistakes I did. Select your web site title and description wisely. Your choices in this areas not only affects your readership and search engine rankings, but also your AdSense earnings.
