As the SEO saying goes; “Content is King”. However, it wouldn’t hurt if your royal content is dressed up regally, right?
Which is why I really appreciate Smashing Magazine coming up with this list of 45 Excellent Blog Designs. And visually excellent they indeed are!
If you’re a budding theme designer, or you have already created a few; you should consider checking out the designs being showcased. There’s a healthy mixed of busy and minimalist designs. And more importantly, the designs are not picked because of the header (or masthead) alone.

Yes the urge is there … i hate my blog design now.. but just couldn’t design it better myself. I might as well use others. *sigh*

Well, you could modify your existing theme and add the bells and whistles progressively.
Design doesn’t need to be a total overhaul at one time. Sometimes making small changes over time will have a better effect.

I’ll get around to redesigning mine eventually. I just modified the Kubrik one to suit my needs. I like the nice clean white background look of a lot of blogs.
Like most things, it takes a long time for me to get around to it.

If your content is king, you can even continuously use the Kubrick default theme.
Having a theme of your own allows readers or visitors to identify your blog easier.
