How Many Hours Of Sleep Do You Need Daily?

I usually sleep at about 2 to 3 am and wake up at around 7 am. This effectively means that I sleep roughly 4 to 5 hours daily. I occasionally take the odd “power nap” during my lunch time. This takes around 20 to 40 minutes.

I find these power naps to be very energizing. In fact, I wake up feeling fresher and excited to take on more challenges for the day!

My sleep pattern makes me wonder, how much sleep do you need anyway? Some school of thought say 8 hours daily. Frankly I think that that’s 4 hours too much! If I were to sleep 8 hours a day, I’d be using a quarter of my day in slumberland. If that isn’t a waste of time, I don’t know what is!

I also found that I sleep significantly more during weekends and on holidays. You might think that this is to “cover” for the lack of sleeping hours during my working days; but I believe it’s more complicated than that.

I’m driven by work and responsibilities. If I have something important to do, I can go on for almost the whole day without sleep… until I get whatever I’m supposed to do done! That’s why I almost never have to bring work home.

When I’m at home, I preoccupy myself with my family as well as household chores. When everything is done at home as well, I fall into shutdown mode; ie. I sleep. When it comes to household chores, I always thrive to get them done 100% as soon as possible. Therefore, I won’t feel guilty for dozing off.

I therefore conclude that I will fall asleep as soon as get bored. No amount of entertaining television, or even Internet surfing can cure my boredom once it sets.

What about you? How many hours of sleep do you require daily?

I’d try to get 6-8 hours daily. As for starting your day a fresh, there are plenty of ways but mine would be to sleep on time and set your mind up to the day. 🙂

For years I had been happily going to bed between 10:30 and 11 pm. I’d get up for 6:30 or 7 am. That’s 8 hours give or take. At the time I felt the more sleep I took, the better and more effectively I would function throughout the day. A problem I found was I would feel the need to put my head down during the day, which I would sometimes do. And I found that some nights I wouldn’t be able to sleep, which was annoying. During the day my body wouldn’t be as lively as it could have been.

I now sleep midnight until 6:30 am and never have problems drifting off to sleep and in the day I’m as active as much as ever. I would suggest 6-7 hours is ample, anymore can make you lazy.
