Excellent topic...I have to say that I agree with Ethel. While there are instances where a nursing home is completely necessary, I've heard far too many horror stories of neglect in some of the best facilities. The mere thought of my parents being even mildly abused, disturbs me. The ideal situation may be to employ a caregiver at home. Most cities...at least here in Canada, have a sponsorship arrangement in place for caregivers for the elderly as well as children.

My 2 cents...

First of all, WOW.. you have a Christmas tree set up in this blog! :D

Speaking about caring for the elder.. my parents, (especially my dad) used to tell us that he prefers staying in the old folks home when he's old. Reason being: he didn't want to burden us.

But I must admit, it hurts to hear those words coming out from my parents. As none of my grandparents end up in an old folks home, I want to do the same to my parents too. Instead of sending them, I'd take a maid to take care of them.

Question is, will my kids do the same to me? lol.

For that, I'd like to say, i believe in karma. Hence why I'll try my best to take care of my own parents. :D

Hi Alexander,

Thank you for your comments. I really appreciate it :)

I agree fully with you that we tend to put off planning for our golden years until it's too late... that is even if we do some sort of planning!

Even with the most meticulous planning, there are bound to be things that we might overlook or unable to foresee; effects of inflation on the cost of elderly care, outsourcing effects, legal and legislative changes, etc.

But again, like you've mentioned, everything requires money anyway.

Very nice article, and I will like to add my 2 cents, I believe many of us over look the fact that one day we will grow old.

We fail to plan for our own retirement, we have no comfortable nest egg set-up for after we retire, and worse even is that we are folling ourselves that we won't end up in a retirement home.

I do hope to have the financila gain and have enough money to pay for my own care. That way I can stay in my own home, and pay someone to care of me.
