Malaysian Elections 2008: BN Gets Simple Majority

The ruling Barisan Nasional (National Front) coalition has officially obtained the simple majority in parliament. However, the more important question would be; Is there much for BN to celebrate in this year’s election?

A simple majority is merely a victory by numbers. The opposition still has the chance to deny BN from having an outright two-thirds majority in parliament. Should they achieve this feat, it would be the first time that the ruling coalition has been denied such a majority since independence.

At the time of this post, the opposition had also won the states of Penang, Kedah, and Kelantan. So BN’s parliamentary victory comes at a price of losing more states compared to the previous election.

I believe that younger voters have made their voices heard pretty loud in this elections. Let’s see if our political bigwigs got the message this time.
