Why I Got Rid Of The ShareThis WordPress Plugin

The ShareThis plugin is probably among the most popular ones for WordPress. It can be seen literally everywhere! I got on the ShareThis bandwagon since version 1.4 was released. Although I love the idea behind ShareThis, there is one particular thing that I dislike about it.

The ShareThis plugin is consumes a hell of a lot of bandwidth for a bit of code that mostly stays in the background (in terms of visibility). Check out the page traffic stats for HTNet (year 2008 to date):

ShareThis plugin bandwidth consumption

Yes, the ShareThis plugin PHP file actually tops the list for being the most viewed page! So far this year, it has consumed almost 162MB of my server’s bandwidth… and all this from a plugin that remains in the background most of the time. In addition to the PHP file, ShareThis also loads the Prototype JavaScript file that is around 70KB.

Like I said earlier, I love the idea behind ShareThis. It provides a simple interface for visitors to bookmark or send a page link via email. It’s beautifully done too!

I’ve gotten rid of the ShareThis plugin, but I’m not going to get rid of the ShareThis function. What do I mean by this? Well, I want it on my pages, I just don’t want the bandwidth costs associated with it. Which is why I’m glad that there’s a remotely hosted JavaScript version of ShareThis for (online) publishers.

Personally, I find it much easier to implement than the original ShareThis plugin. It’s also very easily customized without needing to mess with code of any sort. One significant advantage it has over my old ShareThis 1.4 plugin is the availability of usage statistics. Now I can track if my visitors are really sharing some link love to my pages ;)

So if you’re looking for a cool widget to help your visitors share the links to your web pages more easily, check out ShareThis.

Wow, I didn’t know how this plugin is such a sleeper bandwidth consumer. I will definitely change my implementation to ShareThis for online publishers. Thank you for the post!
