What I Did When My Blog Was Down

When I took a look at my mobile phone at dawn after waking up, I was greeted with this text message from Joneh who sent it at 11:21pm the night before:

Meen, the server down for 1 hour already! WTF like that?

It was probably the first time I got WTF’d by Joneh. Hahah!

DVD Sniffer Dogs Get Medals

DVD sniffer dogs, Lucky and Flo, were awarded medals from the Malaysian government for their contribution in tracking pirated DVDs:

“The dogs have proven to be a major asset in our fight against the pirates and we intend to continue what Lucky and Flo have set in motion,” S Veerasingam, Malaysia’s deputy minister for domestic trade and consumer affairs, said in the statement.

If only KPDNHEP would source for dogs that would bite the balls of scratch and win scammers next. Or perhaps, they are too busy chasing after mamak stalls that are charging 80 sen more for iced Milo.

Sometimes things like this makes me wonder what exactly are the priorities of KPDNHEP; are they really interested in protecting consumers, or are they just publicity chasers.

Staying At De Palma Sepang? Stay Away!

I’m writing this from De Palma Inn Sepang. I’m at room 219 on the bed. And around me are about a dozen black ants. I’ve killed about a hundred of these small insects, but they seem infinite in numbers here.

I had no intention of staying here. It was an ad-hoc booking mostly due to the fact that KLIA LCCT was not as near to my sis-in-law’s house than initially thought. So I was glad that out of nowhere I saw De Palma Inn Sepang by the road.

PHP4 Support Ends In 2007: More XOOPS Woes For Me

Believe it or not, PHP4 has been around since 22 May 2000. Over seven years of providing web developers with a robust development language. However, 2007 is the final year that PHP4 will be supported.

Personally, I have no qualms about this. PHP5 is stable enough (at least I think it is) and has already been deployed on a lot of public servers. Even HTNet runs on PHP5; in fact, we’ve been running it since 2005.

However, my main concern is with the CMS platform being used by my company; XOOPS. I’ve played around with XOOPS on a PHP5 setup previously but it didn’t turn out too well.

A couple of important modules just simply won’t work at all. I know that I’ll be in for a hard time if I were to manually fix all the kinks. Nevertheless, I know that in reality I have these choices:

  1. Find a more modern open source CMS to migrate over
  2. Continue running XOOPS on the PHP4 platform
  3. Code a custom CMS with all the necessary features

Now what features do I need in a replacement CMS? Well, here are the key things I need:

  • Customisable user access control (using groups or similar)
  • Has task management features (currently using a hacked version of wsProject)
  • Has document management features
  • Has event management/calendaring

I’ve scoured OpenSourceCMS.com but have yet to find something I like. Do you have a CMS you’d like to recommend? I’d love to hear from you.

Giant’s Idiotic Quality Of Service Campaign

I recently bought a few things at Giant Taman Pelangi. Take a look at the receipt I got and guess how many items I bought. For your information, the receipt is exactly 61.9 centimeters long, that’s 24.37 inches for you non-metric folks.
